P.S Just noticed that I'm posting on the wrong thread. This should probably be on the discussion thread as it's not a sound creation. I'll post this sort of stuff there in future.

Personally I think, that's just the weirdest wave spectrum I've ever seen.
Okay Alien, here it goes then. And continuing with percussive sounds, a kick from raw data. My headphones might be dying, this sounds a bit deeper and heavier through loud speakers. I'm also playing around with lots of different images at the moment, so hopefully something more interesting to upload soon.

Also, I've updated the settings on my Flickr account. Apparently the default settings disallowed downloading of original sizes with a few other restrictions (we can't have that). Don't know how that happened, but it should be fixed now.
Image to sound. Man, Alien, you're going to be sorry you created this dare. You'll never hear the end of me

(doomed as soon as moderation happens )
EDIT: it happened, we're really doomed now!
Love the title, it made me laugh. And nice remix also, cheers!

Spectral images rock btw
A different method when using Bitmaps & Waves. See description.

Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but don't forget to download "JPEG library" from victor's site, it'll save you the bother of converting all jpg's to bmp and the converted sound is exactly the same.
Great, beautiful!
I have to do more experiments with Bitmaps&Waves.;

toiletrolltube wrote:As I expected, your image sounds great I have no trouble keeping the SA part of the license (to me it's still a derivative) but some potential users tend to be more scared/blocked than they should by the SA clause, may I publish the sound I obtained as CC-BY ?
As for the avatar. Feel free. Here it is: http://secure.flickr.com/photos/toiletrolltube/13334961964/ It's a screen shot of some past waveform viewed in Cool Edit's phase analysis.
Hi Copyc4t, that's something I don't think about when uploading to Flickr, I just accept the default. I've now looked at the license options and there doesn't appear to be a choice for public domain, so I've changed it to allow commercial use, which is the nearest I can find to CC0.
I feel the same way about *my* images as I do sounds (I'm mortal; it's not important), it's really up to you how you license your sound, I respect your choice and thanks for asking anyway. Besides, all I did was load a sound from a data file, apply some effects, hit print screen and paste. Who created it really? I could say Syntrillium, but I would really veer off topic if I got into that. Lets just say I was the midwife Glad the image sounds great.
Probably a whole new topic here for "Legal" help and Attribution questions on the use of raw data, system files etc.
Thank you! Here's the sound of your avatar:

EDIT: sound available!
I had done some experiments on it, the unaltered image has a different "floor" sound because of the window borders, and a loud start and end for the same reason, while the grid provides a quite harmonic drone with the horizontal lines and a regular beat because of the vertical ones.
I also have a retouched image without the grid, I can upload that sound too if interested, but this one is very appropriate for this Dare: I cut the image so that the grid is 16 boxes wide, and rendered it to 2 seconds, so making it 120bpm compatible; besides, since the sound is stronger on one channel, I appended a version of it with channels inverted for balance's sake.
To sum up what this sound is about, we could say that even aliens, despite their advanced tech, look with horror at a toilet roll tube as it means the same thing all around the universe: we're out of paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi trebblofang, even within the Inverse Fourie window alone with its small amount of parameters there's lots of scope of sound manipulation. Little things like adjusting the Range dB in relation to sample rate can make huge differences in the sound you're trying to achieve. Amazing software, yet so simple. I had another look on his site recently and found that there's a Linux version available too. This in turn lead me to Buddha Orchestra in related software http://buddhaorc.wikispaces.com/Buddha+Orchestra Although, that's probably more suited to musically inclined people. Worth checking if you're into midi and keyboards combined with images. And he even paints very beautiful pictures.

Thats sounds very interesting Copyc4t and I'm looking forward to hearing it. I love the part "we're out of paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" lol! Why hadn't I looked at it that way.

If we talk about more musical image sonification, you should check RGB MusicLab.
It produces MIDI textures from image files.

Trebblofang, great to see there's even more out there. Thanks for the link. I've converted audio to midi in the past, so why not images?
Copyc4t, it sounds great and you can still see part of the original image in the spectrum. You've immortalised my avatar in sound, I'm honoured

Dear friends and 'daring' Freesounders
I appologize I have not been as active on this thread as I would have liked posting new sounds and commenting on all the sounds you have been posting. - work and personal life have just kept getting in the way in the last few days
Anyway... The good news:
1) I have a lot of new sounds (which I just have not had the time to upload yet)
2) I will be conducting a sound experiment - Some people have commented that the sounds created with the techniques we are discussing here can sound very unnatural and sometimes even disturbing. I will be uploading several slightly modified versions of a sound and asking you to tell me which ones sound most unpleasant - details of the experiment and instructions will be posted soon.
3) Now that we have been exploring these techniques for a while, how about putting them to good use and try to compose a piece which uses sounds that have been created or modified using data-bending or sound-to-image? How about finding a collab partner and doing it together? -- no rules, no deadlines...
One last thing...
If you are creating sounds based on these techniques, be sure to post here so that your work is noticed by others, since a lot of sounds get uploaded to Freesound and they may be difficult to track otherwise.
Also remember to add the tag/label "dare-26"
