I was initially excited for the new map, and indeed it's cool for searching stuff, I like that. But on the other hand it seems to have lost almost any functionality for me as far as uploading. With the Google version it is easy to switch to the map view and follow clearly labeled roads. This is extremely helpful for me when I am in remote areas, and in general the Google maps have much more stuff like lakes and mountains and landmarks labeled so it is easier to locate things if you don't have GPS coordinates. I'm hopeful everything will improve over time with that. But currently it makes me not want to deal with geotagging at all since even if I first find it on Google maps it's a challenge to find the same spot on the Freesound map.
Hopefully it is clear how this map is much more useful:

I do agree. I have the same problem. It is hard to find the right spot where I have recorded the sound.
I hope it will be better later.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting, we did not foresee this as an issue. I have opened a ticket in our ticketing system to re-enable the button to switch from "streets" and "satellite" views similar to Google Maps. The detail in the streets and places shown should be good enough. I'll let you know when we have an update for you to test.

I guys, are there any new on this geotag topic?
I cannot find the locations to geotag my uploads, without street names it's a very hard task. I cannot either choose the latitude and longitude coordinates found in another map and apdate the freesound ones.
What else can I do?
Thanks

As suonidigallipoli suggests a way to input lat/long coords directly would be great. (don't know if possible, haven't explored very deeply, but other than pan and zoom haven't found any useful navigation options.)

It's a bit cheeky, but it's simple to input or retrieve precise coords from google maps so copy and paste would be clumsy but a good work around for those like me without smartphone/gps.

I support the small guys, but mapbox has a way to go to integrate and present it's data so it's as usable as Goog.

Hi, I'll look into this, promise, but meanwhile you can introduce latitude and longitude (and zoom) directly in the input fields.

To demonstrate a solution is in the works: https://github.com/MTG/freesound/pull/1229 (nerds only) smile

Hi,
We just deployed an update for the maps which features a "show streets" button that should do what you need smile Let us know if it works as expected for you!

NOTE: if you don't see the button you might need to refresh your cache.

Thank you very much! Now with the show streets button it's far better and I managed to find more stuff but it still doesn't recognize some little south Italy villages streets while google map does and the longitude and latitude input doesn't work either or I'm doing something wrong using it.

Hi Frederic,
Thanks for your efforts. This is a helpful step, but I think part of what bothers me now (and actually did when it was google maps) is the map area on my screen is very tiny. So when I zoom in to a useful level for finding a remote place it can be difficult to gauge how close I actually am since I can only see a tiny amount of area on the screen. In any case I'm able to geotag things a bit more easily now, so thank you for that.

Setting latitude and longitude manually does work, but the map does not get updated. That's what's confusing you. We'll update this behaviour at some point so the map is updated.

Yeah, we'll look into making the map area bigger!

Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks very much Frederic! I was able to upload and geotag some sounds without any assistance from google maps like in the past. Awesome!
