Would help searching for sounds so you don't hear overlap!

I love the way sounds overlap. You can put many on repeat and have them all playing. If you don't want that, then pause the one playing. But admittedly, this could be a nice option for a user setting, somewhere.

I also like playing many sounds at the same time and making a quick "composition", but I also understand it would be useful to be able to stop other sounds when playing a new one. Maybe it could be implemented using a modifier key, something like "alt+click play" stops all sounds before playing the new one while simply "click play" will play the sound without stopping previous ones. What do you think?

Since it isn't something I am asking for, don't take this as an answer, but...

another idea is to have a second play button that has the number "1" in it which does what your alt-click play would do ... but that requires space in the waveform display which might not always be available (just a thought)

This would be my number 1 request too! I'm typically using it for sound effects (not music), so that option would be great so you can quickly play in succession and have the previous sound stop playing. (Thanks for the great database btw)

seconding what samhenman said - I never use freesound.org for music, only foley/sound effects etc.
