Part of my "home ambience journal" pack, documenting an urban location over time under different environmental conditions. See the pack description for more about this location and its sonic characteristics.
The ambiance of the rear deck of a house in the Central Hill neighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts, in the Boston region.
Recorded on 2025-05-07 at about 14:20. It was warm but cloudy: about 71F / 22C, 54% humidity, light breezes.
This recording is similar to exterior_deck_20250428_3 (also in this pack), but with a few differences. The weather's not as sunny and the microphone pattern is different. This recording captures the sounds of bees buzzing in the wisteria bush that's about 5 yards / meters away from the listening position. The microphone pattern is different to portray this more clearly. The wisteria had just bloomed and there were a huge number of big bumblebees buzzing around in it. See also garden_wisteria_bees_20250507.wav, which provides a closer perspective to the buzzing bees.
Audible elements:
* Birds (House Sparrow, Mourning Dove). See my bird-identification notes for more information.
* distant traffic from the elevated I-93 highway, and somewhat closer vehicular traffic sounds
* sounds of human activity, including distant voices and someone using power tools
* motor and fan sounds
* wind
Recorded with a Sony PCM-D50, with mics in the 90-degree (coincident) position, using a windscreen.
Processing: 2-octave highpass filter at 80Hz.
