Home Ambience Journal

Part of my "home ambience journal" pack, documenting an urban location over time under different environmental conditions. See the pack description for more about this location and its sonic characteristics.

The ambiance of the rear deck of a house in the Central Hill neighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts, in the Boston region.

Recorded on 2025-04-28 at about 15:50. It was a sunny, clear spring day, temperature 75F / 24C, low humidity.

Audible elements:

  • birds: American Robin (Turdus migratorius), Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), possibly House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). See my bird-identification notes for more information.
  • distant traffic from the elevated I-93 highway
  • wooden windchime
  • motor vehicles on nearby streets
  • motors and fans
  • wind

Recorded with a Sony PCM-D50, with mics in the 120-degree (wide) position, using a windscreen.

Processing: 2-octave highpass filter at 80Hz.

@klankbeeld -- thanks for the feedback!

I've updated my sound description and profile test with more information about how I identified these. I'm using a minimum confidence level of 0.5, which returns fewer results. For example, I don't hear blue jays at #0:27 or #0:40. I love the Merlin app, though, and have been using it wherever I go, and I've been learning a lot! I find it works well in a live context.
