The MC - Kenny Winks was doing his job, trying to keep a bunch of deadbeat drunks interested in a stupid "public access" cable TV show of (believe it or not) lipsyncing celebrity look-alikes.
Cutting edge of television... still, it's not much better than what's on today.
This is his warm up before the camera was rolling.

Just listened to them again - sounds like a ground loop hum, not phase prob. On the other hand, they were recorded in 1988 on a freekin' Tascam PortaStudio for cryin' out loud.
