HD reference video of this set-up is available here.
An 11-car Norfolk Southern freight train speeds by, left to right. Stereo mic at 120-degree spread is only 15-feet from the track and pointed directly at it (perpendicular to the tracks) at the height of the trucks. Two locomotives and 11 auto-rack cars make for a quick experience.

Oooops - was reading/posting from my cellphone earlier - I didn't quite see the description doing it that way :-( reading it okay now from my desktop, though... I also checked out your video - Very nicely done!

Thanks bunches! I was pretty close to the 15-feet I mentioned in the description, but it was maybe as close as 12 -- about as close as I dared go. Check out the video link at the top of the description for the set-up location. Though the camera was angled up-track, the mic was not.

Very nicely recorded! Sounded great! I could feel the "speed" of the train flying past while listening to this on headphones. It has a *really* good balance and sound quality to it - Excellent!! How far away did you setup from the train?
