Hi,

im a student currently working on a post production assignment. Im looking for a high pitched ringing sample you would hear in some movies after a shell or explosion goes off beside a soldier and the sound kind of brings the soldiers perspective into the film as he can't hear normally. an example is at the start of saving private ryan when the soldiers are in the water advancing onto the beach and this happens. any replies or help would be greatly appreciated.

Not exactly what im looking for mate. Its more like a simple sine wave kind of tone. Like the kind when you've been in a club for hours playing loud music and you leave and your ears are ringing.

nice try though!

I made this sound. I don't know if its high enough, but its about 13500 Hz, so you can probably find a tone generator program to get the one you want. Personally I used Berna to make this sound.

Cut back the high frequencies and it will sound dull and muffled, e.g. low pass filter, equalization.

Any software which lets you have several tracks should be able to do this. Like so: Have the muffled sound and the original lined up underneath each other on 2 tracks. Have the muffled one on a high volume and the normal one completely silent. Then, edit the volume envelopes so that the normal sound slowly rises and the muffled one slowly weakens. You may need to make these envelopes not as straight lines, but curved, so the sound level doesn't drop just a bit in the middle of the transition.

In Audacity the Envelope Tool is in a box under Edit. The image is two triangles, one above the other with a blue line in between. There are instructions on usage in the help files.
