Free software with GUI where modifying spectrogram modifies sound ?

I've seen free software which does that, but can't recall where.
You modify the spectrogram, à la photo-shop , and the sound is changed accordingly,
e.g. erasing part of the spectrogram image removes some of the sound spectrum, etc.
Any software suggestions ?
Well, the real one is iZotope's Iris synthesizer. It's a great deal of fun, but definitely not free (retails for around US $200).

One interesting freebie that allows you to play with the spectrogram of a WAV file is called Virtual ANS by WarmPlace.Ru.
He has a number of curious little software oddities that focus on audio-visual experimentation. Check out PixiVisor and PhonoPaper as well as Virtual ANS.
There is another free VST that had similar features a while back. I will try to dig it up.

Thanks for that link , "Virtual ANS" on the face of it looks ideal, (and better than the similar software I vaguely remember) , however everything that's been through "Virtual ANS" sounds vocoded , whether you like it or not , see ... http://www.freesound.org/people/Timbre/sounds/250529/
I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth : "Virtual ANS" it's a very interesting tool for making electronic sounds.

Seems like Adobe Audition added graphical sonogram editing several revs back, didn't it? And Sony has a relatively recent product that is focused primarily on spectral manipulation of varying types ("SpectraLayers" -- look it up). [EDIT: Oh sorry, the original post asks about "free".]

If you are looking for something in VST format, try this.
I have used it to clean up sounds and for creative purposes with good effect:

Photosounder is the closest I can think of, from reading your original post.
It is not free, and I do not seem to remember it having a free demo that you could try either.
I have used it once or twice to cleanup sounds. The editing is basic and it is quite slow (has to re-render the sound after changes)
Transients usually suffer baddly, although there are ways to fix that.
Have you tried SPEAR?

Thanks for that link. The results with SPEAR are more like the original than "Virtual ANS",

I think we have a winner.
["laoe" requires Java to be installed beforehand.
To run "laoe" on windows right-click on "laoe.bat" (a windows batch file) then select "run as administrator" ].

ocenaudio is a lovely-looking audio-editor ...

( a lot better than similar freebies like Audacity ),
but it doesn't offer editing via spectrogram, (like "laoe").
Do you know or have you used Audition 3 the first version by adobe? (I crave an alternative to that)
Is "ocenaudio" anything like Audition?

Audacity did add spectral editing a few years ago,
but Audcaity3 is an absolute basket-case at the moment.
[ OCENaudio does not have spectral-editing, and cannot run VST3 plugins ].
