With AlienXXX's blessings, the solo dare's back again! Let's cut right to the chase:
We have quite a few beatboxing samples on freesound. And I think we can contribute many more! With this dare we are going to do exactly that -- first get creative about beatboxing and upload those samples, and then make a composition out of the samples. Thus, there are two phases to this dare.
This thread signifies the Warmup Stage. During this stage, all we are going to do is start beatboxing and recording those terrific ideas coming straight out your mouth! The rules for this dare are outlined below. (A complete example of warmup submissions is given at the very end).
Just a quick note: If you can record and store a sound, you can most definitely upload, too. Please do not be shy. We need as many samples as we can possibly gather!
Sample Submissions:
1. You must record (not synthesize) and upload a minimum of 10 beatbox sounds, although you can record fewer and contribute, too, but you won't get any points if your total upload count is under 10. You can make these sounds anything you like, but part of the reason for this dare is to increase our (freesound's) beatbox library, so variety in sound "types" translates to bonus points. Different "types" of sounds are highly encouraged. For my sanity's purpose during scoring, we are defining the following categories: hit sounds (percussion hits like kick drum, snare drum, hi hat, cymbal, clap, snap, clave, woodblock, stomp etc), loops (a whole rhythm/beat at a certain bpm - it is required that your beat's bpm be divisible by 15 for ease during the composition stage), and any other creative sounds (like vocals, pads, choir, vinyl scratches, bass etc). Think of the "creative sounds" as the miscellaneous category. Anything that isn't a hit or a loop is a creative sound. Remember, the more sounds you upload the more points you get.
Here's a biggie: No synthesized sounds allowed. All sounds must be made using your mouth. So if you decide to do a clap sound, you need to "speak" the clap, nawimsayin'?
2. Sound manipulation is not allowed. You may not process or add effects to any of the uploads. The only thing allowed is noise filtering, but only in a way that does not mightily alter the originally recorded sound.
3. You must tag the samples with "dare-19". Make sure you put the hyphen in the middle, so it is easier for moderators to find your sample and make it available sooner.
This is not a requirement, but it would be a great help during the composition stage if you could put all your sounds in a single pack labeled "beatbox dare-19 $username" where $username is your freesound username.
4. All sounds must be uploaded to freesound before the deadline stipulated below. Also bear in mind all of these uploads must be your own creations.
You must leave a post on this thread stating that you uploaded the sounds so that the moderators can quickly make the sounds available to download. In your post, you must state the total number of sounds as well as total varieties of sounds you have uploaded for this dare.
Scoring:
Scoring is pretty simple. For each sample you upload, you get 1 point. For uploading all 10 samples, you get 5 bonus points. For uploading exactly 15 or more samples, you get 3 more bonus points. For having only one variety of sound, you will get 1 bonus point. For having two varieties, you will get 2 bonus points, and for having all three varieties, you get 3 bonus points. Finally, putting all the sounds in a pack will earn you 1 more bonus point. Thus for 15 uploads containing all three varieties, put together nicely in a pack as described above will earn you (10 + 5) + (3) + (3) + (1) = 22 points. And if I overdose myself on my daily estrogen shots, I may become generous and give you 4 extra points. Just joking.
About the 4 extra points.
There's no final winner for this dare, but there may be a final winner for the composition phase if we have enough submissions. I do not want to delve in any detail for the composition phase, but scores from the Warmup Stage will impact the final-final scores. So if you're a potential composer, there's a big incentive for you to partake in the Warmup Stage!
Deadline:
From the moment this thread is created to 11:59 GMT on 4th April 2013, Thursday, you will be allowed to submit samples. Any submissions after that date will not be scored, and will not be allowed to be used in the composition stage. That said, you are still free to upload after the deadline; just please do not tag them with dare-19 or put them in any pack related to this dare. I am sure the freesound community would love any and all samples you have to offer!
Deadline for the compositions will be April 29th, 2013 (Sunday) at 11:59 pm GMT.
Quick Recap:
10 or more beatbox sound uploads; 3 varieties/categories of sounds; must be your own recording, no synthesized sounds; all uploaded sounds should have the "dare-19" tag; better if all your sounds for this dare are put in a pack called "beatbox dare-19 $username" where $username is your freesound username; must leave a post stating total # of sounds and varieties uploaded; deadline for submission: 4th April, 2013 11:59 GMT.
Example:
Here's a scenario: I decide to record 17 beatbox sounds. 10 are hit sounds, 5 are loops (3 of them at 75bpm, 1 at 90bpm, and 1 at 135bpm because all the loops' bpm needs to be divisible by 15), and 2 are creative sounds. Because all the sounds are created by me, I will go on to upload them to freesound, and tag each one of them with dare-19 and put each one of them in a pack called beatbox dare-19 afleetingspeck. After that, I will put up a post on this thread that reads something like "Beatbox samples uploaded. Total sounds uploaded = 17; total varieties = 3".
Once the sounds are uploaded, I as a judge will count the sounds thus: 4 hit sounds + 4 loops + 2 creative sounds + 7 additional sounds --> this way you will get the maximum points.
If the scoring seems too complicated, don't worry about it. Focus on your beatboxing skills, and leave the complicated stuff to me!
That's that for the Warmup Stage. Once we are past the warm-up stage, I will put two more threads: "Dare 19 Beatbox Composition Stage" and "Dare 19 Beatbox Discussion".
If there are enough composition entries, there will be a "Dare 19 Voting" thread and a subsequent "Dare 19 Results and Final Thoughts" thread.
You can use the current thread for any questions, comments and discussion related to the Warmup Stage. I would even encourage you to just post a simple "hi" in here so that you get subscribed to the thread and remain updated on everyone's submissions.
All right, then! Let's get cracking and put our beatboxing skills to the challenge!
EDIT: A few darers have asked for the deadline to be extended. I see no problem with this. Deadline for the Warmup Stage is extended by 2 days. Please have all your entries in by 6th April 11:59 pm. I will add the composition stage as I close the deadline for this stage.
Hi a hic a ump ah ump ah hic ah ump kish
Clearly I cannot wait to get started, lol. Great challenge, looking forward to it.
This sounds so fun! I've been beatboxing for over a year and I don't get many chances to show it off to people. It's a coincidence that you made this when you did, because I am auditioning for a school talent show as a beatboxer. I think I'll submit my entry tomorrow. I'm just confused on a couple things. Are you supposed to just make beatbox sounds (like a single kick drum or hi hat)or are you supposed to make an actual "beat" with them? Can I do both?

Thanks for the new dare and for outlining everything so clear!
But one more question:
The description implies, that I use my _own_ voice/mouth, but it is not explicitly required, is it?

Okay thanks for clarifying! One more question, can I record myself using a microphone? Some sounds sound 10x better on a mic than in person because of the extra bass the mic gives.
Edit: By microphone, I mean have it connected to an amplifier and then use my phone to record it.

Hi, I'll participate with this one loop: http://freesound.org/people/qubodup/sounds/181952/

Thanks a bunch! Maybe you just love rolled "R"? (The loop mainly uses Р and Ч with Russian pronounciation.)

Just a quick question: is this loop at a constant bpm that is a multiple of 15?
Note: http://freesound.org/people/Nmb910/sounds/181150/ is even older.

This dare sounds like alot of fun!
I've uploaded a bunch of sounds.
48 in total.
25 hits, 3 loops, 20 creative
Some of my sounds can fall into more than one category so you're count may be different. Any file with "bpm" in the title can be looped.
I've got some more recordings to process - I'll upload these when they're done.
Cheers

Whoa, this is intense - thank you so, so much!
Eager to hear the whole collection.
Hi,
I really like this dare, so here is my contribution:
Beatbox samples uploaded. Total sounds uploaded = 41; total varieties = 3. Everithing in one pack. Waiting for composition stage
I suppose this is considered cheating :¬) ... http://www.incredibox.com/?music=50755E8C54B49
