Black redstart [Phoenicurus ochruros] singing on top of our roof at the end of June. The song is composed of one melodious part and a very strange bird-unlike sound, which reminds of pebbles being rubbed together. Calls of swifts, city rumble and street noise in the background. Vivanco EM35 on parabolic dish with preamp into Marantz PMD 671.

Well indeed Dobroide, they used to live and breed in mountain regions with rocks up to 3000 m. 200 years ago they started to immigrate into other habitats such as small villages with old houses and later on big cities. They use holes in the walls and under the roofs to build their nests. Here in the city of Cologne their chances to survive depend less on the availability of food like insects, but more on the lack of breeding places, which they don't find in modern architecture.

Very good. This call I associate to scrub, mountain ranges, rocky slopes... Funny that you recorded it on your roof !

WONDERFUL - the black redstart is a beautiful bird and one I have only seen on my travels outside the UK - I have never heard it's call - UNTIL NOW!
