This is the sound of "stripped gears in a VAV box," as described by building management. Something in our supply room ceiling related to the HVAC system, apparently. Serves a dual-purpose as a psychological experiment on the human tolerances for audio distress.
Before identification, it was variously imagined to be: a giant pencil sharpener, close to our location but in another dimension; or the ghosts of a bunch of street mobsters still having their last shootout.
