Signal chain was as follows:
1) gate (otherwise the quiet parts would have a lot of digital sounding noise after processing)
2) Spectral processing (frequency reversing) applied using Unfiltered Audio's SpecOps VST plugin.
3) Reverb
4) slight compression
effects 1), 3) an 4) above were applied using Ableton Live's built in effects.

There are cheaper and free options for those interested in trying spectral processing. For example DtBlkFx which both toiletrolltube and I love very much. It does have some disadvantages, such as introducing a long delay (not really 'latency', it is just how the plugin works) and also the fact it is 32 bit only.
But does things no other plugin does, so worth it!

It never ceases to amaze me how sounds can be transformed with spectral effects. Pricey software though.
This almost sounds vocal in places, like a demonic song.
Also, you've reminded me, I wanted to process that also.
