Here's a recipe passed down by my grandmother:
1. Grab all these bass sounds (this works with any common grouping of sounds)
2. delete the ones you don't like
3. Load them into a sampler of your choice, as if you were making a drum kit (one sound per note)
4. Configure your sampler to play each sample at it's original pitch
You now have a really cool bass "kit". From here you could run it through an arpeggiator or sequencer for fun times. Also, creating groups of samples at different pitches is an nice easy way to generate melodic ideas.
