Microblocks, vol. 1: A Soundscape Percussion Sample-Pack

Architecture shapes and constrains the acoustical properties of sound. The built environment allows, within limits, particular variables that the adventurous field recordist can seize on to manipulate in the recording process. To think the built environment as a terrain of experimentation is one step towards denaturalizing the order of things and imagining another world.

Trash Can Echo #1 is a recording of the same trash can, in the same area, as 'Trash Can Roll.' It was recorded with a Tascam DR100. The difference, however, lies in the placement of the microphone. For this recording, the mic was held several meters away from the trash can, in the corner where the echo resounded loudest.

One sound taken from the 'Microblocks, vol.1' percussive found sound sample-pack. The sample-pack features 135 unique field recordings culled from the ordinary soundscapes of Santa Cruz, CA.

Find and download (for free) the rest of the sample pack here: https://fieldrecordingworkinggroup.bandcamp.com/releases

The sample pack comes with an accompanying essay describing the method, politics and historical context of the sample-pack.
