I'm standing on the railway bridge over the river Waal near Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

Ships sailing under by, both left and right. The first 15 minutes a ship with running propeller right at the quay wall. Behind me passing trains, bicycles, mopeds and runners. Right to the city where apartments are built. Sometimes you here the traffic in the city.
After a while parents with a little girl on bikes enjoy the view 20 meter from me.
A wonderful urban setting.

Every day 600 ships pass the city of Nijmegen. It makes it the busiest river of Europe.

The building of the first railway bridge here started in 1875. The bridge was ready in 1879. Nijmegen was connected to the national railway than. In World War II the central bow of the bridge was blown up twice. The railway bridge was part of the Waal crossing, part of Operation Market Garden. In 1945, the damage was repaired.
