I did this sound for the 10A(b) Peer-Assessment of the ASPMA Coursera course. I have used the sms-tools software (by the Music Technology Group of University Pompeu Fabra) to transform the original sounds and the Audacity to combine them. Following is the explanation I sent with the sound for the course:

The first sound with which I worked is http://www.freesound.org/people/JamieBlam/sounds/146095/.
I transformed with the harmonic model compressing in time the big mass of the beginning, and dilating in time and stretching by 0.1 the frequencies of the rest of the sound. Then I distributed (copying and pasting) this sound along a minute with audacity and applied a small echo to its end (to each copy).
The second sound I took is http://www.freesound.org/people/Robinhood76/sounds/61522/. I compressed it in time to 50 miliseconds in order to get later a kind of granular synthesis. Since I worked with that very short sound, at every transformation I mantained the same scalars so I always gave the scaling factors list and the stretching factors list the form [0, x, 1,x] with x between 0.1 and 10. Then I played with combinations of this form (for example, mantaining fixed the frequency scaling factors I changed the frequency stretching factors, or fixed both I changed the timbre variation) and I put together in audacity, distributing them in stereo, like the above transformations.
Finally I normalized all.
This process could be automatized in the code with a 'for' loop changing x and writing the wav files.
