Alto Pass, Illinois, United States

The haunting call of the Pileated Woodpecker, the largest woodpecker in the United States. It's quite an experience to hear this loud, rattling call break the stillness of the peaceful woods. You can also tell these beautiful birds around by looking for fairly large, RECTANGULAR holes in the trees.

Recorded with my Zoom H4N recorder and using the internal, built-in microphones.
The location was the Shawnee National Forest.
