Yes, it's a cuica. Not played by a sambista or anyone too close to Brazilian music, so possibly not quite it. High and low pitch, -1 is lowest velocity zone, -4 is highest velocity zone.
Recorded with Rode NT5 and AKG D-40 microphones through a Yamaha MG-102C mixer to a Roland UA-1G interface with silver-plated copper twisted pair cables.
