I did this by rattling a pet pen - one of those fold-out railing things you use to keep pets such as rabbits enclosed. I was doing it for a video of some rioters shaking and pushing over some hoarding on riot police. The final sound is louder. I did this by throwing the railings onto a pile of newspapers. recorded on my ipod touch using a blue mikey microphone. I took the recording down an octave on cubase to make it sound bigger.
