Field recording captured while walking through Manarah Square in Ramallah, Palestine on Friday night, August 15th, 2025 at 9:00 PM. Unlike most evenings in this busy downtown area, the streets were quieter, since Friday is the Muslim day of rest and communal prayer, when many shops close and nightlife slows compared to other weekdays ([source: Wikipedia]).
The soundwalk begins with the voice of a small child, followed by groups of teens playing, footsteps and casual conversations of people in the square, and the steady flow of cars in the background. The distant Isha call to prayer echoes through the city’s night soundscape, adding a cultural soundmark. Toward the end, a police siren rises briefly above the ambience. Wind can be heard throughout, shaping the outdoor texture of the walk. Recorded in stereo using a Zoom H5 with XY mics by Mohammad Balawneh.
