I have previously uploaded a recording of wood ants (Formica rufa), https://freesound.org/people/naturenotesuk/sounds/431729/. That was in single channel mono. This recording has been made with a homemade two-channel contact microphone and sounds best through headphones, though will play through speakers with no problem. The mic was plugged into a Zoom F6.
It was fascinating to watch the ants go about their business of building and repairing the nest - bringing twigs (often much longer than the ant!) and other material to the site. No ants were harmed in the making of this recording.

Replying to Anne_WFF - the nest is mainly made of twigs and the ants were moving over these and moving the twigs around or bringing new material in. They also walked on the surface of my contact mic, so, yes, it is their movement that you can hear. I was sitting about a metre or so from the nest and watching the ants on and around the nest. This nest was not the biggest I have seen, being a little under a metre across.

Is that the sound of ant legs walking over a surface or maybe the material they move around?
