Phnom Penh, Cambodia

phnom penh's art deco central market (psar thmei in the local language, which translates as "new market") is a fascinating and intensely beautiful structure. on the inside as well as the outside. it is one of these buildings which consist of a central hall (domed in this particular case) with its unique sonic properties immediately striking the attentive listener upon entering.
this recording is intended to share this experience - a browse through the seemingly infinite amount of jewellery stalls. a sphere which tries to evoke eternal glamour and pride. grandeur. glistening jewels on cheap alloy. bling. heavenly voices seducing the shopper in a sacred place. enjoy.

the recording equipment for this session consisted of a roland R-05 solid state field recorder plus the roland CS-10EM binaural microphones.

Amazing how you could get the market sounds without the usual motorbikes and motors parasites (even when recording from the inside) !
