Aahhh yes.

"What is the sound of one hand clapping?", that old zen favorite. ;-)

Zen koans are the Japanese descendants of Ch'an kung an from China. They are meant to be illogical so the mind is forced to use a different form of processing in order to understand them, to transcend itself. They became fashionable when students became less able, and thus were not able to grasp 'it' immediately.

One answer to the above koan is "no sound". But knowing that doesn't help you unless you get the flash of insight that goes along with it. In fact, it cheats you of an opportunity to gain that flash of insight. :-(
