This recording is part of the mab-microphone-comparison-water
sample pack.
The three samples in this series were recorded simultaneously (from
approximately the same position) with three different standard stereo
microphone arrangements: mid-side (mixed into standard A-B), with a
Jecklin disk, and with a Crown SASS-P quasi-binaural PZM system. To
facilitate comparison, no EQ or other filtering (except
level normalization and mid-side decoding, as needed) has been applied.
The 2'28" recordings capture small, choppy waves breaking against the
rocky shore of the San Francisco Bay at Cesar Chavez Park in
Berkeley, CA (USA) on October 1, 2006. The microphones were positioned
approximately 6 feet (2 meters) from the Bay's edge, oriented toward the
water. A small airplane flying overhead becomes audible at about one
minute into the recording.
This recording was made with a pair of Sennheiser MKH-800
microphones in a mid-side configuration (inside a Rycote blimp).
The "mid" microphone was set to "cardioid" and the "side"
was set to "figure-8" and connected to a Sound Devices 744T
digital recorder at 96K/24bits.
