A busy recording made in heavy woods of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge in southern Illinois, on Wednesday July 2 2025.
Like most deciduous forests in the northern hemisphere, summer is when the majority of birds are the warblers and other migrants that live in central America and the Caribbean in winter. During summer, these birds invade these full-of-food forests to gorge on insects and raise a family.
For those of you interested in the names of some of the birds that you hear on this audio clip, they are, in no particular order:
Indigo Bunting, Eastern Towhee, Red-Shouldered Hawk, Red-Eyed Vireo, Blue Jay, Acadian Flycatcher, and a Hooded Warbler.
Also noteworthy in this recording occurs at 40 seconds in, 44 seconds in and again at 52 seconds in. These re the times a male Deer expresses his unhappiness at my being there.! Startled me as I stood there surrounded by thick forests. But, after all, I was in his living room.
Recorded with Sound Devices 702 audio recorder.
Microphones: Sennheiser MKH 8020 arranged in A/B configuration spaced about 3 1/2 feet apart.
Enjoy this snapshot of the hot, humid, alive forests during July.
