The joy of recording audio is that you can set up a recorder, then go on and do other things like write, garden, wash dishes, heck, you can even participate in this wonderful hobby as you sleep!
That is exactly - and happily - what happened to me recently.
I set up my Sony PCM D100 and its built-in microphones oriented in X-Y in the weeds at the edge of a small town park. I then went to sleep.
Imagine my great surprise the next morning then when I discovered I had " captured " one of my favorite sounds which, to me, is representative of summer: the call of the Common Nighthawk. The scientific name of this mosquito eater is Chordeiles minor.
From what I could estimate from my timeline, about 2:30 in the morning this Nighthawk started flying slow circles around the park neighborhood and began its sad-sounding single note call.
Enjoy this sound of summer!
*Note. The overall level you will notice is fairly low, BUT, even though the Sony PCM D100 does have good, fairly quiet preamps, I chose not to boost the level in post for fear of bringing up what little noise floor there is. Those of you sound editors who are much better than I am at cleaning up recordings can probably clean this up a bit and get rid of the ever present low white noise of the neighborhood's central air conditioning units.

Thanks for the good feedback klankbeeld. I'm still going through the overnight recording. So far, the only nice surprises are these nighthawks. I have so far heard some rustling around from either a Possum or a Racoon. Fortunately, my recorder and the furry windscreen were not harmed! That is amazing you had a Jackdaw take your dead cat. When you think about, the furry wind protection devices we use do look a lot like a prey item!

What a beautiful shot this turned out to be. I am curious to see the whole night.
I also did this setup once and then a Jackdaw had plucked my entire dead cat off the microphone. If I do this again now I will put the recorder in a cage made of chicken wire. 🫤
