About the picture
The photograph shows three ‘salmon boats’ in the river; these are wooden boats approximately 6 to 7 metres long and 2 metres wide. They have a short wooden mast, about 4 metres high, to which a jib and a small mainsail were once attached. The masts could be lowered quickly so that the boats could easily pass under bridges. These boats were both sailed and rowed. The boats were formerly used for salmon fishing. On the right is the grass of the river embankment on which we are standing. We look out over the tranquil river, which curves to the left in the distance and where an inland vessel is sailing. The banks are covered with trees and shrubs. At the bottom left is the microphone recording the sounds of the river on the left and the embankment with the traffic on the right.
