Spring day in the small park of the hamlet of Haanwijk.

A quiet woodland scene on a late‑winter day. A narrow dirt path runs along the left side, guiding you through a small park near the hamlet of Haanwijk. The trees stand mostly bare, their branches thin and open, letting soft sunlight filter through and cast long shadows on the ground. On the right side lies a neatly stacked pile of cut branches or small logs, showing recent maintenance work in the area. Some tree trunks are wrapped in green ivy, adding a touch of color to an otherwise brown, early‑spring landscape.

About estate Hanwijk
Haanwijk is an estate and nature reserve located near Halder, which is in the territory of the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel in the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands.
Haanwijk is approximately 110 hectares in size and includes a manor house, a bake house, a spring house and farmhouses. Several buildings are on the national monument list.
In addition, Haanwijk has park forests with ancient trees, historic dikes and the characteristics of a stream valley landscape.
Haanwijk is located near the confluence of the Dommel and Essche Stroom rivers.
Since the 1960s, much of the land in this area has been drained for agricultural purposes, even though many plant and animal species here actually need high water levels. In addition, nature has suffered from excessive nitrogen deposition. The Bossche Broek Zuid, of which Haanwijk is a part, is affected by both acidification and desiccation. And that while the area has so much potential! It has been designated a Wet Nature Pearl and is part of the Brabant Nature Network, which connects nature areas.

Manager Brabants Landschap is working on the redevelopment of this area to make it biodiverse, rich in nature and water-safe. We are transforming former farmland into natural habitats such as herb-rich and fauna-rich grassland, wet hay meadows and wet rough pasture. The latter two natural habitats require a high groundwater level, which is why we are working on making ditches shallower and constructing, replacing and removing culverts and weirs. We are also excavating nutrient-rich soil in a number of places, as the desired nature types actually benefit from nutrient-poor soil. In this way, we are creating a nature-rich Bossche Broek Zuid full of life!
