Four more hours to go before the New Year begins. In the distance, children are out on the street watching the fireworks being lit by their older brother, the boy next door, or their father. People are driving to visit friends and family to celebrate this annual night. In the Netherlands, we eat oliebollen and appelbeignets appelbeignets on this day. After exchanging best wishes, drinking champagne, and setting off the fireworks, most people head back home again. Going home is not a sign of lacking hospitality — the distances in our small country are simply short.
