About the picture
Taken at the corner of Wilhelminabrug on Stationsweg in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, this photograph captures a vibrant and distinctive cityscape that reflects the charm of the city.
The image shows an intersection where historic architecture and modern urban design converge.
In the foreground is a spacious paved pedestrian area with light-coloured tiles and a large planter with a green shrub, adding a touch of nature to the urban environment. A microphone with a windshield is visible in the lower right corner.
In the centre of the photo, you can see a street with a few pedestrians, cyclists and a passing car.
On the left the Wilhelmina Bridge that goes over the Dommel river with a striking pillar.
The background consists of a row of historic buildings with ornate facades and a spire
The trees along the street are fresh spring green.
The partly cloudy sky allows sunlight to shine through, casting soft shadows on the ground.

about the history of the Wilhelmina bridge

First bridge (1875):
The original bridge was built after parts of the old fortifications were demolished. It served as a connection between the city centre and the new station in the Het Zand district. Initially, the bridge was called the Stationsbrug (Station Bridge), because it led directly to the station.

Second bridge (1923):
This was built with decorative sculptures by sculptor Hildo Krop, including figures such as Emperor Maximilian of Austria, Duke Henry I of Brabant, Bishop Franciscus Sonnius and Jeroen Bosch. The second bridge was destroyed during the liberation from the Second World War in 1944.

In 1954, the current bridge was built and named Wilhelminabrug, in honour of Queen Wilhelmina.
The bridge is decorated with high reliefs by Frans van der Burgt on the pylons on the station side. These rectangular reliefs (one of which can be seen in the photo) depict scenes from the history of 's-Hertogenbosch from 1185 to 1944. The bridge is not just a crossing over the river; it is a symbolic gateway to the city, where visitors literally walk past a visual history book. The works of art on the bridge pay tribute to the rich culture and history of 's-Hertogenbosch.
