Cold winter morning with little wind on the outskirts of the city.
There are some crows, rooks, and greylag geese here, and I hear the blue tit. In the background, the traffic and the sounds typical of a city.

About the area
The Gement Polder (De Gement)
The “Gement Polder,” also known simply as “De Gement,” lies to the east of the nature reserve “Vlijmens Ven,” between Vught and ’s-Hertogenbosch. It is a low-lying, marshy natural area with grasslands, ditches, and reed beds nourished by seepage water from higher sandy soils. The area is known for its rare bluegrass meadows—grasslands with species such as yellow rattle, orchids, and stoneworts—that give the landscape a bluish glow during the summer months.
In addition, the area plays an important role in water retention; it collects water to help prevent flooding in the city of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
Ecologically, the Gement Polder forms a transition zone between the drier sandy soils and the wetter peat and clay areas, resulting in a rich diversity of vegetation. This makes the entire complex of polders south and west of the city highly valuable for species that depend on base-rich seepage water, such as the rare large blue butterfly, a species that now only survives here in the Netherlands.
