City traffic passes above the microphone. A Cetti’s Warbler, a small bird, has hidden itself in the reeds close to the microphone. #1:05 Beneath the city wall, a tour boat glides by, and the guide tells the passengers that they are now, quite suddenly, sailing from the city onto the city canal. The boat gently turns to the left. #2:52 The next tour-boat.
The photo offers a view from the city wall of the fortified city of ’s-Hertogenbosch, overlooking the nature reserve Het Bossche Broek, which is part of the Van Gogh National Park. This park spans a large portion of the southern Dutch province of North Brabant, including the area around Den Bosch. Het Bossche Broek lies directly south of the historic city center and is part of the formal park landscape that stretches between Eindhoven, Tilburg, and Den Bosch.
In the foreground, a portion of the medieval city rampart is still visible. Beyond it, the Singelgracht flows gently, bordered by tall grasses and reeds. On the water, an electric tour boat sails by—available for booking from April through October—offering visitors a unique way to experience the city from the water.
Het Bossche Broek is a distinctive marshland with a rich history: once a strategic defensive zone, it is now a cherished destination for walkers and nature lovers. Within the Van Gogh National Park, it symbolizes the harmony between urban life and nature—just as the world-famous painter Vincent van Gogh experienced it during his youth in Brabant. The trees in the distance mark the boundary of Het Bossche Broek, beneath an overcast sky that adds a tranquil mood to the scene.
