This is a warm day at the Holland Diep, a wide river in the Dutch delta. The microphone is positioned on a breakwater that protects the small harbor. There’s a strong, gusty south-southwest wind with gusts up to 32 km/h. Large inland vessels sail across the river, their engines sending a thudding sound over the water. In front of me, about two kilometers away, I see the industrial area where Shell has its refinery, and from where the wind is now blowing. But the first signs of activity on the harbor grounds are already just five hundred meters away. Seagulls occasionally fly past.

About the picture Waterfront Scene at Holland Diep
The image captures a tranquil riverside landscape along the Holland Diep, a broad waterway in the Dutch delta. In the foreground, tall grasses and green vegetation grow wave bariers, adding a natural texture to the scene. Several piles and markers to navigate stand near the water’s edge.
To the left, a the entrance of the Moerdijk city harbor area is visible, featuring in the distance the industrial structures and cranes from the Moerdijk Industrial area and ports. The water stretches into the distance under a partly cloudy sky, with soft light filtering through the clouds. On the horizon, where the trees line the edge of the landscape, lies Natuurgebied de Esscheplaat, a protected nature reserve known for its rich biodiversity and tranquil wetlands. This natural backdrop adds a sense of ecological depth to the otherwise industrial setting, blending human activity with the quiet resilience of Dutch nature.
