Two boys fish by a brook, chatting playfully.

A peaceful countryside scene with a small (fish ladder) stream winding through lush greenery. Tall trees line the left side, casting shade over the water, while grasses and plants border the stream. A rustic wooden bridge in the foreground leads toward the water, and the clear blue sky above completes the tranquil setting.

First, a kingfisher flies by. You recognise it by its high-pitched whistle. Then two Dutch boys come along—ones I’ve seen before. They ask if they’re allowed to fish here. I tell them it’s fine as long as they don’t hook my blimp. They chat the way boys their age do: a bit cocky and awkward, but otherwise good guys.

🐟 This fish ladder is a part of the weir south of Sint-Michielsgestel in the Netherlands.
This fish ladder helps fish swim upstream to reach their breeding areas.
Fish like the river lamprey, the sunbleak, and the ide use it.
The fish ladder is 980 meters long and climbs 1.90 meters in height, using fifteen natural stone steps.
