A blue flash and a whistling call: this is how a kingfisher often announces itself. Kingfishers are mainly birds of streams and rivers with fresh, running water, but also breed near stagnant water (especially in the Netherlands). They dig their nest tunnel on sandy or loamy steep bank edges. Can also be seen in winter in more open and brackish or salt water, looking for enough food - small fish, aquatic insects and the like - and ice-free, clear water to get hold of that food.
