MIX 2

Dommelstroom. Waterkrachtcentrale
First cooperative hydroelectric power station in the Netherlands in the small river Dommel. Some birds in background.

What does Dommelstroom do
An average of approximately 600,000 kWh is generated annually; enough green electricity for about 170 households. This green electricity reaches the people through energy supplier ' Huismerk Energie '.

How does it work
The Dommelwater falls into the auger. The power of the water let the auger rotate slowly (actual in this recording 2.355s) and a generator then converts this energy into 100 % green electricity. The amount of electricity that is generated depends, among other things, on the amount of water that flows through the auger and the height of the water on both sides of the power station.

250 billion liters of water
Every second no less than 8000 liters of water fall down at the weir. This is 250 billion liters of water per year! About 200 billion liters of this goes through the power station. This means that 80 % of all water helps to produce green electricity.

What did it cost
The total investment of approximately € 1,000,000 has been raised by, among others, the DOEN Foundation and through crowdfunding by more than 500 private individuals.

Jan and Bram
Jan Taks and son Bram are the inventors, initiators and developers of this power station. They made a design for the power station in five years. In 2015 they founded the Sustainable Energy Cooperative Dommelstroom. The members of the cooperative also jointly own the hydroelectric power station.
