Hill / heathland ambience on a little windy day in the Netherlands with traffic indirectly 60 meter lower and 150 m away. ![]()
Three-quarters of this top of the hill is surrounded by trees. The village of "Mook" is in front of me. You will of course hear the birds in this area, but also the man-made sounds at the bottom of the hill. Some wind in the trees sometimes.
About the hill “De Zandberg”
"De Zandberg" (sand mountain) was created 150,000 to 200,000 years ago during the ice ages at the time. The ice pushed up the sand and gravel and formed so-called push moraine, which can reach 60 to 90 meters high. This one is 60m.
This hill used to be part of "De Mookerheide". In 1574 the famous Battle of the Mookerheide was fought here. With a little imagination you can hear the soldiers.
Sand and gravel were extracted here for 40 years in the last century. Much sand was used for the local brick factory. Various geological deposits were found during these excavations.
At the end of the last century, this area was also misused as a waste dump. The waste was covered with sand from the quarry. After closure, the landfill received a top seal, consisting of a mineral layer, a drainage layer and a base layer of 1 meter thickness on average. This seal prevents rainwater from penetrating into the underlying waste. The drainage system provides drainage of rainwater to various infiltration buffers around this park. A system has also been established for extracting gas from the landfill. Electricity is generated with this gas.
It's nice that this environment has now been given back to nature.
Part of the nature reserve "De Mookerheide" is the 60 metre high push moraine "De Zandberg".
