Ambience. Shipping over river in summer. Birds round, but not to loud. Very far voices.

The waves lash against the stone groynes in the river. The boat disappears into the distance. This is a quiet Monday morning on the river Maas in the Netherlands. The water level is low and the boom of the floodplain in which I am sitting is rock hard. The temperature is fine and there is hardly any wind from the northwest. When the sloshing stops you can hear the birds and the next ship is slowly approaching. The human economy is always going on. For a moment, the Covid pandemic seems to be forgotten. As I write this in November of 2020, I know it was only the very beginning and we still don't know where it's going. The passing ship cuts through the water like a knife and, despite passing close by, it results in only a few waves. The pleasure yacht that sails upstream does make a lot of waves. The ship is a cruiser with a straight back. A reed warbler sings its song as the next boat approaches. People across the river are talking to each other. A small helicopter goes to its destination. Geese are numerous here and they make themselves heard. The old tractor gives an enormous plume of smoke when it accelerates. It is so striking that one ship generates more waves than another and that seems to have more to do with the shape than the size. So I had another morning sitting at the water and you can enjoy.
For this sound recording I not only used a Mide-Side microphone set, but also hung a hydrophone in the water. This makes the waves that hit the stones lively. The ship's engines also receive a special dimension.
