Ambient recording. It is a very hot summer day. Sometimes some wind in mic. The microphone is on the edge of the polder of the 'Baardwijkse Overlaat'. ![]()
This small piece of land is called 'De Zeeg'. Behind me the dike covered with oaks and bushes. A bike path on the dike. For me the outlined polder. It is a scorching heat. This afternoon I will not be outside for too long. Some traffic, plane, human voices and wind in trees.
History of this polder
Shortly after the middle of the nineteenth century, the Provincial Executive of Noord-Brabant and the then water board of the Polder Oudheusden, Elshout and Hulten were involved in a small legal dispute. The disagreement revolved around the construction of a diving sluice in the Meerdijk, in the vicinity of the plot called “De Zeeg'. This sluice ensured that the excess water from the Drunense polder could be discharged into the outside of the polder of Oudheusden, Elshout and Hulten. The province, however, declared the complaint unfounded and referred the water board to the court, which would have to determine whether a situation had indeed arisen where one polder suffered damage from the actions of the other polder.
The drainage of surplus water has always been a major concern in this area. The Heidijk offered protection for centuries to villages such as Vlijmen, Nieuwkuijk and Drunen. The commissioning of the Baardwijk Overlaat made it possible from the end of the eighteenth century that large quantities of water along the Heidijk were led back to the Meuse. And the flooding around 's-Hertogenbosch could be better controlled from the beginning of the twentieth century by the construction of the drainage canal from that city to Drongelen.
