They have been a familiar sight and sound since 1969 all around town in Leipzig, Germany: The old Tatra 4D tram cars. Some of them are still in use, though they have been modernized during the 90s.
I regard their rattling and jingling as a decaying sound, as they have to make way for newer trains, which have the advantage of being much quieter, being accessable also for wheelchairs, air-conditioned but at the same time have much less character within their sonic fingerprint. One thing I at the same time value and cringe to is that they even sampled the old trains' characteristic bells for the new ones. At least I simply do not believe that those bells are still real, they sound sterile to my ears.

This recording is a short tram ride. You can hear the tram approaching (the jingle signal at the beginning is that tram entering the station) and I enter the first car. I keep standing next to the middle door, facing driving direction. That way I managed to capture the sound of a typical tram ride. I still am amazed about how quiet the passeners remained all the time, maybe they were just tired after a long working day. ;-) This is different at other times of the day or the weekends.
The car's windows were open, so passing cars and especially other trains on the left side are also quite clear.

Ironically the signal bell of the door I was standing next to ... was broken. Bad luck, but such is life.
