or make Faraday cage of 'wire gauze' and put all gear in there..

Wonderful. Not without risk for your equipment when you use long cables. In this situation use 50cm max. And make compact setup. Mics on top of recoder. Even with XLR. Potential static voltage can easy go up to few hundred Volts high in mountains on a few meters. Than you can say goodbye to the gear.
