Volvo S60 Engine Ramp Test

Please check the full pack for other sounds in this set.

Here are engine acceleration + deceleration ramps of a bog standard 1st gen Volvo S60, taken from a exhaust output angle. The car was/is equipped with a 2.4-liter 5-cylinder inline engine and stock exhaust. I recorded the ramp driving on 2nd gear, going uphill on a straight asphalt road. A Roland R-26 was used to record at 96kHz 24-bit.

The scope of recording session was to:

1) try how the said mic performs for on-board car recording, and
2) capture acceleration ramp while reading out the rpm gauge

For latter, I've tagged the ramp files with markers to indicate the actual momentary RPM of the engine. This allows to verify pitch conversion formula from Hz to rpm for an engine with uneven amount of cylinders and study Hz-to-rpm conversion via spectrogram readout.

Exhaust was recorded using a Sennheiser MKE600 shotgun (supercardioid) housed inside a Rode Blimp mk2 fitted with windjammer fur. This was mounted right above the exhaust pipe in close proximity fashion. Mic was pointing down at the open end of pipe and recording tip of shotgun casing at approx. 10-15 away.

This positioning resulted with excess static noise past the 4k rpm mark, where the forced airflow out the exhaust pipe gets more intense. You can compare for airflow vs. tire noise after 6000 rpm mark, when deceleration ramp starts.
