Years later, I have discovered that this was technically not a gong I recorded but rather a tam tam, which is similar. The instrument is 22" wide, is made of bronze, and was manufactured in the early 1990s by Rancan by LP. I was standing about 1 foot from it using an M-Audio Microtrak II.
