Young pigs' slaughter. WARNING: this particular sample is very moving, at least for me. It begins with a cry and slowly fades out as the poor creature dies. Recorded in a country house's open yard near Cabra, S Spain. Sennheiser ME66 + MKH30, Shure FP24 preamp, Edirol R09 recorder. It was very hard for me to record this so I hope it's any use.
EDIT: I feel the need to clarify. This is the traditional way of killing the pig in Spanish (and many other countries) rural environment. It is based on bleeding (severance of the major blood vessels), which is not the norm in industrial slaughter houses nowadays (where stunning is applied previously to reduce suffering). I uploaded this to document a traditional practice - very cruel in my opinion - , for the sake of anthropological interest if you wish. Listeners can extract her/his own ethic/moral implications.

We shouldn't be so quick to label this a "cruel traditional practice". Nowadays people don't have a connection with their food anymore, which has huge implications for our society. We don't witness the death of our food or we might think twice about eating it in the first place. Our food is processed far away in massive slaughter house with no regard for the animal's quality of life. It may be killed in a "more humane way" in a slaughter house but when a pig lives its entire life without moving or seeing the light of day in a single pen I would't call that very humane. That's my two cents. Thanks for the sample!

Indeed, very moving. I am startled by the eerie resemblance the initial scream has to that of a human voice. The recording cuts one in two...
To be even present is, in my view, brave and courageous. This recording brings to light some things that are profoundly disconcerting. There is the thought that this beautiful animal suffered before it drew its last breath, and there is the further reality that an apparently intelligent human being, capable of experiencing a tremendous spectrum of feelings, seems able to put one of the most important of those to one side - that of compassion - and inflicted such unnecessary suffering.
I'd extend my own neck and suggest that the emotional impact of this recording is so far reaching that, as a piece of work, it is art.
