3year old Sony PCM D50 records almost silent kitchen, only clock and later fridge.
Recordings start with rel level on 0 every 15 sec it goes up by 1 until it reaches 10 and after that for me two useful setings 5 and 3,5 for louder sources I use 2 also.

Recording gives lot of information about quality of recorder. I've done the test. I applied compression keeping same loudnes of noise for all sensitivities and clock was getting louder while sensitivity increases up to 3. The best S/N ratio for silent sounds is at sensitivities over 3 regardless of setting in this range. Noise floor on 5 is -90dB in range 0,1-1kHz and -100dB over 1kHz. Looks like Sony PCM-D50 is not much more sensitive than hearing. Enough for professional recording of environment, but to less for doing expansion of sounds below threshold of audibility.
