This is part of an exchange between the field-recordist and a friend. His thesis was that the distance between the recordists ears was not enough to create a sufficient stereophonic effect and so was not convinced of the value of such an exercise :) The final question - "...and what is the purpose of it" is a good one. The sound in the background is an airconditioning pump. Recording chain: Recording Chain: Sound Professionals SP-TFB-2 Microphones (in ear) - Edirol R-09 (mic in, level 10, high gain).
