On the side of a small countryside road in the southwest of France, natural and human-made sounds blend together on an autumn night. High in the sky, planes fly overhead as cranes pass a few kilometers below, migrating south. Leaves fall onto the grass, while the sounds of foxes, owls, dogs, and roe deer echo from the forest in the background. Closer by, human presence is subtly marked by the occasional passing of vehicles and the chimes of the village church bells, ringing 10 p.m.
