I finally got myself a decent preamp and tried it out at the local Veteran's Day parade. The festivities (that I recorded) started out with a 21-gun salute, followed by a flyover of a vintage WW2 fighter plane. I knew the gun salute was coming, but I did not know about the fighter plane so I missed the first part of that as it was taking off from the nearby air strip. After recording the plane I walked over to the parade route, where I found a fairly quiet spot (yes on my side of the street there was no one else for 50 feet in either direction) and recorded things in the parade that I thought were interesting. This recording is a 21 gun salute from three field artillery cannons, recorded in the middle of a large field, not far from an airport. You can also hear the blasts echo off nearby buildings. No processing except normalization and fade in/out.

digifishmusic asked about the preamp/recording chain. I am still somewhat embarrassed by it, but since field recording is something I only do for fun occasionally, I cannot really justify pouring lots of money into it.
Here is the chain:
1. Built-in mics in the Sound Professionals SP-PASM-2 preamp/stereo mic, with the high-sensitivity microphone option. http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-PASM-2
For this recording I had the sensitivity switch set to "low". I should have turned the gain down a bit but I had to just make a guess as there is no way to check the level of a cannon blast ahead of time :-)
2. Sony DCR TRV340 digital camcorder, using the audio/video jack. In VCR mode this allows me to record audio (but not video). This works fine but I have to keep the mic away from the camcorder otherwise it picks up the camcorder motor noise.
3. Windows Media Maker to pull DV-AVI from the camera over the Firewire connection.
4. Cool Edit Pro to extract audio from the AVI and do audio edits.
Kind of convoluted I know but that is all the budget allows at the moment.
