I have several tape recorders that work like an old lathe :)
Pulsing appears only when writing a file to the card (while recording)
During pause, the pulsing stops... which I couldn't record :)
I think the display sound and data transmission overlapped.

I have an old recorder which sounds like that, without the pick-up coil.
[ I think it's the electronics driving the LCD display : ~1Hz pulses ].
